cosmic doesn't quite grasp that the sovereignty claim is thin since the legal Chinese government, long recognized by many countries, was the Kuomintang under Chiang Kai Shek, in internal exile on Taiwan. The revolutionary government never confirmed its legitimacy by free elections, and the former Kuomingtang did yield, a dozen years ago, to open contests. Thus, the current Taiwanese government has a greater claim to legitimate rule over its territory than the Communist regime in Beijing.
