Did you ever read Dostoyevsky's "The Possessed", also translated "The Demons"? The Russian intelligentsia was besotted with revolutionary schemes already, over a generation before the Revolution, and the liberal faction was too used to seeking applause for their progressive thoughts to resist even outlandish schemes effectively, lest they be called reactionary. Nicholas was too much convinced of his Divine Right to rule to follow the British path, which was the best hope for the establishment of centrist institutions. Once the revolutionary ball got rolling, the most ruthless faction was practically guaranteed to get power, time after time......
