Tench: I'm wondering about that comment that I put in boldface. Shouldn't AMD be pretty sure by now, given that the "roadmaps" (which seem to be written with washable ink these days) show Clawhammer being released in Q1 2002?

SSE2 support is 100% certain. The VirtuHammer has full SSE2 support and that's what all the developers are using. (And the Linux x86-64 being developed uses SSE2 as well)

Yes, they should. If these news are true, I find them somewhat disturbing. If Hammer is indeed largely based on the K7 design and has no SSE2 support, AMD could be in deep troubles next year. But keep in mind that these comments are from a PR representative, which puts them somewhat in doubt IMO (on Comdex e.g. several PR persons stated that Palomino would have no performance enhancement at all). Usually they don't tell more than everyone already knows. OTOH most bad news on AMD this year turned out to be true later. And personally I doubt that we will see Clawhammer volume before Q3 2002 anyway.

I think' I'll mail Jan Gütter on Monday to see if I can get some more information on these issues.

Tench,

AMD is running about 1 year behind.

Originally Mustang was due in Q3 last year.

Now Q3 2001 if we are lucky.

Hammer family will likely be Q3/Q4 2002 assuming 0.13/SOI ramps up ok.

Seemslike Intel will have product window to drive a truck thru.

regards,

Kash
