Here's HWP/MCDT....

Correction -- McDATA Corporation (Nasdaq: MCDT, MCDTA)
In LAM070, Hewlett-Packard to Offer McDATA's New Director Product for SAN Solutions, moved earlier today, we are advised by a representative of the company that the headline should read, "Hewlett-Packard to Offer McDATA's New Galaxy-Class Director Product for SAN Solutions," rather than, "Hewlett- Packard to Offer McDATA's New Director Product for SAN Solutions," and that the sixth graph should read, "Hewlett-Packard's SureStore products will be sold through both direct and indirect channels beginning in April of 2001 as the Hewlett-Packard and McDATA relationship continues to develop through a two-year OEM contract period," rather than, "...beginning the end of April 2002..." as originally issued. Complete, corrected release follows:
Hewlett-Packard to Offer McDATA's New Galaxy-Class Director Product for SAN Solutions
BROOMFIELD, Colo., April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- McDATA® Corporation (Nasdaq: MCDT - news, MCDTA - news), a global leader in open storage networking solutions, announced today an agreement with Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP - news), a leading global provider of computing and imaging solutions and services, that enables Hewlett-Packard to sell and distribute McDATA's new storage area network (SAN) enterprise backbone product, the ED-6064 Director, which was announced today, April 9, 2001, at the Storage Networking World conference in Palm Desert, Calif.

Hewlett-Packard will distribute the ED-6064 Director worldwide under the Hewlett-Packard SureStore brand, which will also feature McDATA's enterprise- to-edge line of channel switch products including the ES-3016 Switch and McDATA's also recently announced ES-3032 Switch. The Hewlett-Packard OEM partnership was developed after thorough testing to validate McDATA's technical superiority in scaling applications for large SAN deployments, consolidating SAN islands, and managing large fabrics through McDATA's Enterprise Fibre Channel Management software integration into Hewlett-Packard OpenView Storage Node Manager.

``Hewlett-Packard chose McDATA's ED-6064 Director after exhaustive vendor comparison because we felt McDATA's backbone deployments are creating industry-defining standards for core SAN switching requirements,'' said Don Kleinshnitz, general manager of Storage Network Solutions at Hewlett- Packard. ``Our goal in reselling McDATA's Director as the Hewlett-Packard SureStore Director FC-64 is to enable our customers to build very scalable and resilient fibre channel networks to meet their increasing storage requirements and business needs.''

Extensive application testing on the new director product was conducted in McDATA's Systems Integration Lab before announcing the ED-6064 to the market. This testing will help ensure the smooth implementation and functionality of heterogeneous SAN environments and solutions for Hewlett-Packard customers.

``We are very pleased to work with Hewlett-Packard, now the third largest external storage provider for open systems, to leverage McDATA's next-generation Director product and enterprise-to-edge SAN solutions with Hewlett-Packard's reputation for quality and marketing savvy,'' said Jack McDonnell, Chairman, President and CEO of McDATA. ``Our OEM agreement is a testimonial to both companies' commitment to customer satisfaction.''

Hewlett-Packard's SureStore products will be sold through both direct and indirect channels beginning in April of 2001 as the Hewlett-Packard and McDATA relationship continues to develop through a two-year OEM contract period.

More market share leaking away for BRCD?
This is the first director OEM that I have seen. Will others be right behind?

That's an odd press anouncement on a Friday afternoon. McData announced its 64-port director yesterday, but made no mention of this serverless back-up appliance so there's no way to know if this is a mid-range version of EMC's EDM (accelerator) or EMC/HWP's FasTrax (enhanced virtual tape).
