Disagreements over Kyoto are a bit different then slavery.

Sure, you can make that distinction. But what if the Europeans don't. Or the Pakistanis? Or whoever. The principle is one of not imposing our standards and values and practices on other countries in exchange for them not imposing theirs on us. Or maybe you want to amend the principle to exclude slavery. Or to exclude whatever the US thinks is important. Or whatever Tim thinks is important. You either stick up for the principle or you don't. If you don't, then you have to deal with other countries who may think that slavery is not as important as the death penalty.
