When an application writes to the hard drive, this process changes the information stored in the drive's directories and file allocation table (FAT). Since some of the Norton Utilities programs, such as Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk, need up-to-date directory and FAT information to do their job, they must reread these structures any time another application accesses the drive. Otherwise, they would be using out-of-date directory and FAT information, which could corrupt data on the disk. In most cases, this means the programs must restart." *********************************"I get a message saying I can't optimize because the system is locked by a utility in use" from time to time i've gotten that too, E. again, here's symantec on the subject.... ********************************* "Many programs that access the hard drive are required by Windows to "lock" a drive before running. Only one program at a time can lock a drive. When another program has locked the drive, some of the Norton Utilities applications, such as Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk, will display this error message and will not run. To resolve the problem, restart the computer to MS-DOS mode and run Ndd.exe. This should unlock the drive. You can then restart into Windows and run the Windows application that was generating the error. If this does not resolve the issue, there is probably some other application in memory that is locking the drive. Try closing that program to remove the lock. If you do not know which program locked the drive, try the following steps: 1. Close all programs that are on the taskbar. The taskbar is usually at the bottom of the screen that displays the Start button and the time. 2. On the right side of the taskbar, near the time, are items that are in the System Tray, also known as Systray. Disable or close the programs that allow you to do so. 3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the Close Program dialog box. 4. For each item listed except Explorer and Systray, select the item, and then click End Task. You will need to re-open the Close Program dialog box after closing each program. 5. After you have closed all programs except Explorer and Systray, try running the Norton Utilities program." **********************************"What the hell ARE all those programs in the Close Program Box? Monwow? Poproxy? Robot? Csnsm32? and more. Do you suppose I really need all those?" several of them are norton systemworks programs and, yes, they are essential. poproxy is the email protection. monwow and csnsm32 are norton cleansweep programs that must run in order to monitor installation of software. but they can be shut off if you wish. it's all about how you'd like to configure things. if you'd like to, you can post all of the programs you see running and we can provide you with some insights into what they do and whether or not we feel they are necessary. for now, try installing enditall and going back at the defrag (via speed disk). if you still get the locked message, try running ndd.exe in DOS, as outlined above. btw, you seem to have come a long way, just by the questions you ask. :) mark
