Is there a law of Intel/AMD coupling that I missed at school?

Had I stayed with Intel in May, 1999, instead of switching to AMD, I would have been down 30% instead of being up 200%

Steven: This is an interesting thread, with people predicting Intel's demise while simultaneously saying AMD will do well. I don't see how the two could possible be that decoupled.

It's been argued numerous times on this thread that AMD doing well and Intel doing well are by no means mutually exclusive.

Intel has made some remarkably stupid / arrogant / foolish decisions in the past few years and are paying for it now. In my opinion, however, there's little doubt that they will pull through. I don't think anyone on this thread (bar maybe 2 ;)) honestly believe that AMD will get anywhere near 50% market share in processors within the next 5 years or so.

If you've been wathcing over the past 12 months, the comparative price ratio of INTC/AMD has declined from 3/1 to parity(at least last week and probably again soon)...I'm not sure if that meets the definition of decoupling, but it does represent a significant value realignment...Some here, certainly me, suggest that this favourable comparative price ratio trend for AMD will extend into the foreseeable future with a potential 3/1 price ratio in AMD's favour by the end of the next 12 months...Nothing, but nothing currently happening suggests to me that the rate of change in this trend is likely to decelerate over the next 12 months!!!
