The skills required for most of the tasks in microprocessor design require above average intelligence, but certainly not at the genius level. The main problem with American students is that they lack the ability to concentrate enough for that level of detailed work.

Without the Asian talent, Silicon Valley would not exist. (The city of Cupertino is approximately 60% Chinese.) These are not American born Asians, they are almost exclusively immigrants.

I see the problems with American children and schools as being a fundamental cultural issue. American kids watch endless TV, eat garbage food, and have little or no structure to their lives. Compare that to Asians who are hungry and driven for success, from an early age.

I think we are headed for another Sputnik.

PS I should add that I am now doing (remotely) a microprocessor startup design with a group in Palo Alto, and am once again the only American.
