Thomas,

Venus is approximately the same size as earth, yet the temperature is about 900F higher than on earth. It is also much hotter than Mercury, which is much closer to the sun.

The main reason for the very high temperatures on Venus is gaseous CO2. Despite a night lasting 3,000 hours, Venus never drops below several hundred degrees.

We are fortunate on earth that we have a delicately balanced buffering system for CO2 comprised of precipitated limestone in the ocean. If that balance were to be severely disrupted, earth would become just like Venus.
