China trade:

I don't think China wants to be a huge market for American corporations. I think they are very keen to learn from American companies and then use that knowledge to build up their own industry. Don't you think there are clear signs that they are very nationalistic, and don't want to rely on the rest of the world for things that they need? (e.g. oil) Their own industry can already produce a surprisingly large range of products, even some high tech things such as rockets and satellites.

As for their consumer market, I think that products designed for the very prosperous American consumer are likely to be too expensive for the much less prosperous Chinese consumer. For example US cars are probably too big and too costly for that market. The Europeans and Japanese had a few car designs that are much smaller and cheaper (and do not meet US crash test standards) than anything you see in the US. These would probably sell far better if they ever got market access. A Chinese designed car tailored to Chinese needs might do even better.

Finally, if the market is so promising, then why the huge trade imbalance? Surely China would have no problem finding U.S. products to buy, if they wanted to buy them.

I don't want to be "anti China" but I think the U.S. should be realistic about China's likely intentions. As opposed to what the Chinese tell us when they want to gain access to our market.
