What it means for Monday or next week, or 2 weeks, I don't know. From a purely macroeconomic standpoint, I think in the long run the layoffs are a good thing. (I know it sounds heartless but we're talking macro here). I think one of Greenspans key focus(foci?) is the labor market and he wants to see less wage pressure. Voila! Money has been too easy for a few years and hopefully those getting laid off have some inkling and are prepared skillwise and moneywise. Sounds kind of harsh, but I'm an independent contractor and every day I face a layoff. The remedy is to be aware and be proactive, you can't sleepwalk anymore. RE: GE They are highly diversified, maybe they do have the earnings visibility.
