Jay, Memorex is one of those off-brands.

In this group I include other manufacturers like PNY (BestBuy), Centon (Circuit City),
Feiya (who supplies IJAM MP3 players) and a few others. Right now only SSTI (controller) and
TDK are announced licensees for CompactFlash. So the answer to your question is no, I don't
believe Memorex pays a penny to SanDisk for selling its brand.

Right now there is a price war going on. At BestBuy this weekend you can purchase
a 64MB SanDisk CF card for $79.99 plus tax and a 32MB SanDisk CF card for only
$39.99 a piece. Pricing seems to have come down drastically for all card makers.
I get this feeling that only the strong will survive the next several quarters.
For example, I don't think Lexar anticipated having old "infringing" inventory
left on shelves after March 31, 2001, but it appears that sales have been very slow for
them. Everyone seems forced to match the lowest bidder and this type of situation is
destined to separate the men from the boys.

Lexar Media is launching a lawsuit against some of the second and third tier players,
but not against any on the assemblers who use Hitachi components. Perhaps Hitachi
is too big to take on, so its customers will be protected. I believe these players
are principally Delkin, Kingston, Microtech and Simple Technology. Viking may
also be included in this group, but I am not certain.

Hitachi probably indemnifies their customers against such litigation as well.
Wouldn't that be a pretty standard industry policy?
