It's not so different here. With the ridiculous housing prices we have workers commuting 2 hours each way in the S.F. Bay area in order to live in an affordable home. You have to be pretty motivated to put up with that...along with the traffic, overcrowding, and the loss of civility that goes along with these conditions.
I'm a second-gerneration Californian, and at one time, maybe it was very different than the rest of the country. Now, much less so. People have always been drawn here by opportunity, which attracts motivated people.
From the amount of posts on this thread, I would judge that none of us are overworked by historical standards!

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< However when you live somewhere like NYC or BOSTOn, DC PHILA etc the lifestyle is
tougher. Nothing is made simple or easy. Try going to the DMV or getting a Plummer. The cold winters also support work ethics cause you cant do a whole lot of Golfing when
its 30 degrees out.>>>>>>>>

You could live in a cave in barrow Alaska as well.

That's fine if that is how you want to derive your pleasure, but perhaps others find happiness from their physical surroundings? Living in places you admit are more unpleasant than other places, and doing so out of choice, seems rather odd. People in other places seem happier to me however, and (I don't mean to generalize) people in the places you named seem crabby and unhappy. I suppose being masochistic could be worn as badge of honor, but to me it seems silly, life is too short to live someplace I do not enjoy, call me lazy.....
