In European unity is the seed of European division.

The name of the seed is "Who will lead". Make no mistake, the French see that as akin to their divine right. Not gonna happen.

Re: Historically speaking, 58 years are just a tick.

It seems to have been sufficient for the US government and the American people to forgive and forget. Have you noticed any signs of hostility on our part towards Germany, Italy, or Japan.
Hate is a mental defect; it blinds you to reality.

It's not "hate", James.... it's merely mediocrity.... Europeans can't extricate themselves from their mediocre worldview. Here's a case in point showing us how differently the US and Europe have evolved since WWII: George W. Bush, despised by European literati as a knucklehead, has appointed a Japanese American (Mr Minata) Secretary of Transportation. Well, that's quite a mind-boggling appointment when one thinks of the Pearl Harbour trauma and the "yellow peril" prejudice that still pervades the US public opinion.... And yet, it's nonetheless been possible for a US President to appoint a Japanese American --whose parents were detained in a US concentration camp during WWII-- to a Secretary post! Now, let me tell you, James, that the day is still far off when an Algerian French, or a Congolese Belgian, or an Indian British, or a Vietnamese French will be appointed to some Minister post....

Gus.
