Vietnam Helicopter Crash Kills 7 U.S., 9 Vietnamese

By David Brunnstrom

HANOI (Reuters) - Sixteen people, including seven U.S. searchers for Vietnam War missing, were killed when a Russian-made helicopter crashed into a mountain in central Vietnam on Saturday, a U.S. embassy spokesman said.

``The embassy has been informed by Vietnamese authorities that a helicopter went down in Quang Binh province this afternoon with seven Americans and nine Vietnamese aboard, including crew,'' the spokesman said.

The Hawaii-based U.S. Pacific Command, citing Vietnamese officials, said: ``Reportedly there are no survivors.'' It identified the helicopter as a Russian-made Mi-17.

The Defense Department confirmed that seven U.S. military personnel and nine Vietnamese were killed in the crash.

Someone said the reason why the Chinese don't fly spy planes over here is because we are are so open....wrong!! Our airspace is so regulated that should a Chinese mig try to get close at all, we would have planes in the air so damn fast it would be pitiful.

The main reason the Chinese don't run planes near our coast to observe is that they don't have nearby bases or planes that can fly back and forth across the pacific. They also do have less need of this kind of thing because it is easier to find out things in the US.

We set ourselves up to be the good guys.....so does that mean the good guys go around snooping all the time...and getting countries to let you build bases so you can do more snooping on more countries than anyone else.

We keep watch over other countries more then any one else because we have more capability and because we are involved all over the world. If you want the US to be isolationist then this might not be as necessary but I haven't seen you argue that idea yet. We observe other countries so we can be prepared for what they might do. If we are going to stay involved in the world we would be idiots if we didn't do this.
