elmatador- Here's a couple of articles (that I wanted to reference) right on topic that you should find interesting. I have not read them in detail yet, but will soon. Immediately upon skimming they seem to be quite contradictory. And, as you know, I'm more aligned to the headlines of the first article. IMHO, the time frame for USA 3G could even be as far off as ten years! -MikeM(From Florida)

3G Wireless Future Is Long Way Off

Superfast third-generation (3G) wireless networks will one day foster amazing new services using mobile phones with video displays. Currently, 3G networks are expected by 2003, but it won't happen that soon (except maybe in Japan). The wireless service providers are losing money and can't afford the expense of building 3G networks. It's not a matter of whether 3G will exist, but when.

3G Wireless on the Move

Today's announcement by Verizon Wireless that the company will purchase $5 billion worth of wireless software and equipment from Lucent Technologies is part of the leading wireless operator's plan to roll out 3G services sometime later this year. Coupled with Sprint's announcement of its upcoming 3G network last week, it looks like high-speed wireless services may be available sooner than we thought.
