This election will still be the subject of dispute a hundreds years from now. Who won depends on who is counting and how they're counting. A flat assertion that "Gore won" is as ridiculous as its opposite. Victory is in the eyes of the beholder.

The fact remains, the majority of people went to the polls to vote for Gore. Bush is illegitimate.

The SC added an aura of illegitimacy but our system is based on the Electoral College, winning the popular vote is only a moral victory for Democrats. Winning the popular vote is not the same as winning the election. If you don’t like the current system take it up with your representatives. I think the SC made a huge mistake by interfering. They made everyone aware that they are political animals and are not to be trusted when the chips are down. They stained Bush with the aura of illegitimacy. If they had stayed out of it, Bush would’ve been declared the winner based on the procedures specified in the constitution. You would be just as PO’ed at the raw politics, but at least the Florida senate is elected.

The idea that winning the popular vote makes Bush illegitimate is spacious.
