Dear Scumbria: Try that policy against most gangs after they put a gun to your head, and you would be killed anyway. Some times acceeding to the demands of terrorists and criminals is the wrong thing to do. Or another even more parallel situation is if you were walking down the street in downtown Boulder and the cops grabbed you, handcuffed you, and threw you into an interrogation room. After interrogation you determine that they want you to confess to shooting a cop, raping a little girl, then killing and mutilating her. They make that very forcefully. By your policy, you should confess to all and sign all the papers, etc. Then you can go home. Yeah, right!!! You would be greatly disappointed to find yourself locked in solitary in the nearby prison with Big Rocky "Shiv" Goggliano that hates pedophiles with real passion awaiting trial. There is no knowing what is required, if we go down that route. They may ask for more and more. This apology would not be the end of it. Are you quite sure that is all it would take? I am fairly sure that would not end it and why risk more demands? What if they want the US to pay them a few million? A humiliating trial? We said we were at fault here. Perhaps they want to execute our pilot for murder? You do not know if this is all they want and there is no guarantee of that anyway. Perhaps you are naive. Why don't you ask Senator John McCaine or another POW what happens when one goes down that route? It is not very nice. Yes, China is being quite stupid about this. But, we should not be stupid and stay patient. Good things come to those who wait (and prepare). Pete
