If China wants to do something really stupid, and there is no way we could stop them executing the crew, they will do it. Harming the crew will cause all of the negative results and completely make them into pariahs. Any hope of them joining international groups will go into the dumpster and we will cause them much hardship.

Pete, I was not so concerned that the Chinese will execute them but rather that they will be imprisoned for years. All it would take is a piece of evidence that the plane did not confine its activites to international waters......and getting that evidence may not be all that difficult.

Trying to make this look like we have little if any culpability causes us look arrogant. Any apology put in the context of "apologizing for any maneuvering errors made by the pilots" will do little if any damage to our world position. And it might improve our relations with China..see the post by JohnD.

Besides, China holds the trump card and that is that every time the name China comes up in front of a group of US corporate execs they begin to salivate. Already, pressure is being brought to bear by those execs to get this done. Bush is very beholden to these guys and will be forced to back down real quickly if they apply real pressure. China knows that and can play the waiting game better.

Some of what you said to Scumbria makes sense but that doesn't change the fact that the cards are stacked in China's favor. So lets get on with this before something worse happens.
