waves run in cycles of 7. 6 small and 1 quite a bit larger. A witch's wave is when the 2 biggies come back to back. Very uncommon in the ocean but not all that uncommon on Lake Superior.

I heard that years ago, and had forgotten it until you brought that up. We use to sail quite a bit on Lake Michigan, and that's when it came up.
