I like that confession.
My brother likes to go to a lot of work to prepare dinners.
Spends hours in the kitchen before and after we arrive.
Serves a steady stream of delicacies all evening.
And then upon returning home, Mr. Croc starts rummaging
through the refrigerator searching for "real food".

For me, meals are very much attached to memories.

One of my fondest is of eating salad in the kitchen
at a friend's house in the Bay Area.
A salad made from homegrown basil and heritage tomatoes
harvested from vines growing in pots out on the patio.

Another is of a fabulous salad from Cafe Intermezzo
near UCB...their vegetarian salad that comes
in a giant bowl with lemon and poppyseed dressing...
Atmosphere was great...lunchtime crowd of students..
Don't think I have ever seen so many pairs of
Doc Martins and so much body piercing in one place before..

Uhm... other favourite meals...
a few along rivers here and there around North America.

A certain grilled vegetable salad served up in a
hot crusty roll at La Palmitto in Tucson...
as much for the fun of watching the Sean Connery look-alike
chef at work on his side of the countertop
creating vegetarian and carnivore delights
right before your eyes...

And yes, it really DOES get hot up here in summer...
often in the 90s and sometimes over a 100 for a few days
at the peak of summer.
Tends to be humid at those times too.

A friend was here for lunch about a month ago.
She retired and moved to Mexico a few years back.
Anyhow, she was saying that she finds the summers
unbearable up here now that's she's been away for awhile...
The sun is too intense...and the humidity too high.
That's one of the reasons that I spend so much time
out on the rivers.
I have a favourite river where I paddle upstream
to where the willows bend down over the water.
I sit down in the bottom of the canoe and lie back
against the seat and hold onto a couple of the
long strands of leafy branches
and let the breeze rock my canoe from side to side.
When I close my eyes, I could be a bird grasping a branch
high in a treetop.
It's really quite wonderful.
I often rest there for a half and hour or more
before paddling further.

Anyhow, spring and fall are our best seasons,
but much of summer is beautiful too.
One thing you learn from our winters,
is not to complain about the weather
once it gets above 40 F.
Anything above that is great.
