While I don't support skipping out on legitimately incurred debts, to some degree the credit card companies have brought it on themselves by 1) Excessive marketing of cards 2) lax credit background/underwriting standards and 3) supporting the new BK bill (to the extent of heavily lobbying for it).

Of course, I'm sure AmEX is far from finished with their collection efforts on your friend's balance, and they've almost certainly gone medieval on his credit report.
