Mandela efforts over Lockerbie continue
BBC, 9 April

The former South African President Nelson Mandela has said he will continue to work towards solving the Lockerbie bombing case as Libya seeks to have UN sanctions lifted.

Mr Mandela said he plans to discuss the case with the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, when he visits the UK later this month.

He was speaking after a meeting in the Libyan capital Tripoli with the Libyan leader, Muammar Gadaffi, in which he said he had been given new facts about the case.

Libya insists that the intelligence officer, Abdel Basset Ali al-Meghrahi, who was convicted of the bombing, is innocent.

But the US and Britain say that sanctions will only be lifted when Libya accepts responsibility for the bombing and pays compensation to the victims' families. Mr Mandela was instrumental in persuading Mr Gadaffi to hand over for trial the two Libyans suspected of the 1988 bombing of PanAm flight 103 over Lockerbie.
