"Grow Juice works. Used it as a kid and still do. Don't have the recipe handy but it is things like Tea, beer etc as you say. Soap as a repellant for bugs also works. I don't have a lot of problems with pests though. I grab every Praying Mantis I see and give them a home in my yard. The locusts get a head start while the Mantis' are young but once they get full grown, nothing dares come in my yard or they become lunch. -ggg-

Same with my roses where I put a my ladybugs each year. The aphids disappear within days.
