Anti-Earth-Day Rally Celebrates Science, Industry and Capitalism

(CNSNews.com) - Anyone longing for a whiff of political incorrectness may wish to join the Anti-Earth Day rally in Washington this coming Sunday - on Earth Day, of course. The theme of this year's demonstration is "open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to Oil Production." The event, organized by the Ayn Rand Institute and by the Center for the Moral Defense of Capitalism, is billed as a demonstration in support of industry and technology. Environmentalists claim that opening ANWR to oil exploration would cause massive and irreparable harm to the Alaskan wilderness. "The only 'massive and irreparable harm' is to the truth," said Nick Provenzo, CMDC chairman, in a statement. He calls oil "the very lifeblood of modern civilization," and he accuses environmentalists of attempting to "bleed dry the arteries of American commerce." "Killing oil development to preserve a desolate, ice-covered wilderness is an assault on human life," Provenzo added.

Police State Report
Eurocops want seven-year retention of all phone, Net traffic
By: Andrew Orlowski in San Francisco
Posted: 16/05/2001 at 20:30 GMT

The official EU body that represents the member governments will recommend the long-term retention of personal data at a meeting with the European Commission later this month, according to documents leaked to London-based civil liberties journal Statewatch.

The Council of the European Union, which represents the 15 member governments, will discuss implementing a policy originally designed with the FBI six years ago. It calls for the retention of "every phone call, every mobile phone call, every fax, every e-mail, every website's contents, all internet usage, from anywhere, by everyone, to be recorded, archived and be accessible for at least seven years," notes the journal.

The proposal gives law enforcement agencies powers far beyond authorised, approved interceptions. Existing provisions permit data to be retained for the length of the billing period, up to 90 days.

The proposals are being rushed in front of the European Commission before the European Parliament can agree on a common privacy position in June. The Parliament is already working on personal privacy legislation, and bouncing the other two European institutions now is the Eurocops' best chance of putting their draconian provisions into place.

Anonymity is bad for business
Last November, the Council's Working Party on Police Co-operation put its case succinctly:- "It is impossible for investigation services to know in advance which traffic data will prove useful in a criminal investigation. The only effective national legislative measure would therefore be to prohibit the erasure or anonymity of traffic data."

The European Commission's Justice and Home Affairs Council will debate the proposal on May 28.

The law enforcement agencies, argues the proposal, must have access to "user addresses, equipment identities, user name/passwords, port identities, mail addresses etc" The agencies are also to be provided with "the full name of the person (company), the residential address and credit card details."

The Council's proposal takes its cue from UK law enforcement body NCIS (National Criminal Intelligence Service), which last year proposed that telcos and ISPs store data for one year for 'real-time monitoring' purposes, after which the data would be archived for seven more years in a gigantic new data warehouse.

This paragraph in the NCIS document justifies the demands:-

"The Police Service is now in its third major era ... and is now a directed patrolling, proactive and reactive investigation service," notes the document. "The Crime and Disorder Act empowers ... the national law enforcement bodies in appropriate intrusive data collection in their central role. The lack of appropriate legislation on communications data retention does not sit happily with this strategic direction." [our emphasis]

A gallery of baddies, ranging from organised crime to the authors of the Melissa and I Love You viruses, are evoked to justify the draconian new approach to Lauren Order.

In the looking-glass world of law enforcement, the cops and spooks argue that long-term data retention actually boosts the public's faith in e-commerce:-

"The obligation for operators to erase and make traffic data anonymous, besides obstructing seriously crime investigations, also can lead to a decreasing confidence in, particularly, the electronic commerce..." according to the leaked document.

The EU's own privacy watchdogs - regularly criticised for the opt-outs provided to law enforcement agencies - have condemned the move. The International Working Group on Data Protection in Telecommunications deems the storing of data on all telecommunications and Internet traffic for extended periods "disproportionate and therefore unacceptable." Even the Council's own documents accept that the cops' demands "would probably not be considered proportionate."

Statewatch editor Tony Bunyan was officially refused the documents on the grounds that public oversight would "impede the efficiency of the ongoing deliberations".

Statewatch has launched a new website SOS Europe with Privacy International to highlight the proposal.

Doom & Gloom Report:

Worst nightmare
Terrorists could easily make an atomic bomb from MOX fuel, says a confidential report

Exclusive from New Scientist magazine

Terrorists could easily make a crude atomic bomb from MOX fuel produced at British Nuclear Fuels' new plant in north-west England, according to a confidential report submitted to the British government and seen by New Scientist.

The report comes as the state-owned company is trying to get the government's go-ahead to make MOX, a mixture of plutonium and uranium oxide, for reactor operators in Europe and Japan.

Although the MOX plant, at Sellafield in Cumbria, was completed in 1996, the government has postponed authorising its start-up because of doubts over its economic viability. Last week, as a fourth consultation exercise on the MOX plant ended, Friends of the Earth lodged papers at the High Court in London calling for a judicial review of the consultation, accusing the British government of skewing the process in favour of British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL).

The environmental group alleges that the £462 million invested in the plant so far has been disregarded in calculating its financial prospects, and that the results of an independent audit have been withheld from the public.

"Terrifying possibility"

But now the confidential report submitted to the government highlights another potential problem for the plant. Written by Frank Barnaby, a physicist who worked at the nuclear weapons laboratory at Aldermaston, Berkshire, in the 1950s and later headed the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, it spells out exactly how easy it is to make MOX fuel into a bomb.

Barnaby says that terrorists intent on mass destruction would need no more technical know-how than that used to make the Lockerbie bomb. The expertise required is less than the equivalent skill used in 1995 by the Japanese cult, Aum Shinrikyo, to prepare sarin nerve gas for release into the Tokyo subway, he says.

It would be "sheer irresponsibility" for the government to allow the new plant to open, Barnaby warns, as the theft of MOX fuel pellets would then become a "terrifying possibility".

His report, which was commissioned by the Oxford Research Group, an independent body of scientists studying nuclear issues, comes in the wake of mounting concern about the poor security arrangements for radioactive materials worldwide (New Scientist, 26 May, p 10).

Barnaby reveals three ways of chemically separating the plutonium dioxide from the uranium dioxide in MOX fuel. One, involving lanthanum nitrate as a carrier, was used in 1941 by the atomic pioneer Glenn Seaborg at the University of Chicago.

The other two methods - one of which is currently used at the University of Kiev in Ukraine - depend on reactions with resins. The chemistry is less sophisticated than that required for the illegal manufacture of designer drugs, he says. All the details terrorists need are in the published literature or on the Internet, says Barnaby.
A primitive bomb could be made with 35 kilograms of plutonium dioxide, or terrorists could use hydrofluoric acid to precipitate out the pure metal, Barnaby says. Only 13 kilograms of pure metal would be needed to create an explosion with a yield of 100 tonnes of TNT - 50 times the size of the largest terrorist bomb to date, in Oklahoma City six years ago.

Hard to steal

BNFL points out, however, that MOX fuel would be difficult to steal because it travels under armed guard. The security arrangements "are mature, comprehensive and robust", says a company spokeswoman. "We are 100 per cent confident in the physical protection measures we have."

The company points out that turning plutonium into MOX fuel and burning it in reactors could reduce the threat of nuclear weapons proliferation by cutting plutonium stockpiles. Some plutonium also has to be returned to foreign customers because they own it. The risk of MOX fuel falling into the hands of terrorists is "minimal", BNFL insists.

An atomic explosion in a city centre is "everyone's worst nightmare", says Frans Berkhout, a nuclear expert from SPRU (formerly the Science Policy Research Unit) at the University of Sussex, Brighton. But although turning fresh MOX fuel into a bomb is "theoretically possible", he thinks that in practice terrorists might find cheaper and easier ways of causing mass destruction.

UN Assembly Approves Gun-Control Treaty

This must not stand!
(CNSNews.com) - The United Nations General Assembly Thursday approved a gun control treaty that calls on all nations to work together "to prevent, combat and eradicate the illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in firearms, their parts and components, and ammunition." The treaty is supposed to make it easier to crack down on illegal gun trafficking by helping authorities trace the global movement of all new weapons. The treaty must be signed and ratified by at least 40 countries before it becomes international law. The signing period runs from July 1 through Dec. 12, 2002. Under terms of the treaty, all new firearms would have to be marked with a serial number and the place of manufacture; nations would have to set up import-export licensing procedures; and they would also be required to keep records on all guns, parts, and ammunition made within their borders for ten years. The treaty also calls on nations to pass laws making the illicit manufacture and sale of firearms a criminal offense. Press reports said numerous countries have concerns about the treaty, which raises questions about whether it will ever take effect.

Thank you.

Subject: US Military Training Rapidly with Foreign Troops Here in Europe for US Martial Law
Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 15:25:12 EDT
From: MyTWaryor4JC@aol.com (Pamela Schuffert)

Pam Schuffert, radio, journalist, reporting from Germany -

I have been researching in Germany for 5 months now, and everything indicates rapid training of our troops to work side by side with cooperating foreign troops for the coming conquest of AMERICA UNDER MARTIAL LAW. As I read the European edition of STARS AND STRIPES almost daily, numerous military publications plus European news journals and newspapers, and interviewing actual military here, I am coming to realize the extent that THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DECIEVED AND BETRAYED INTO THE HANDS OF THE NEW WORLD ORDER BY THIER VERY OWN GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY!

One military publication shared about a major operation involving three branches of the US military in which they were learning to work intensely together IN A CONTINGENCY EXERCISE. CONTINGENCY means MARTIAL LAW.

Here in Europe, Americans are being rapidly trained through the Balkan crisis to work side by side with Russians, Germans and other foreign troops ALL UNDER THE UN BLUE AND NATO. They are being trained in various exercises as: weapons seizures, intimidating resisters to surrender and lay down their weapons, how to operate prisoner detention camps holding resisters of this UN MNTF "peacekeeping" effort complete with guardtowers, and more. JANE´S DEFENCE magazine has published pictures of German Bundeswehr (military) looking over large caches of weapons seized from "insurgents, militants, etc.," all in this obvious training exercise in the Balkans designed to prepared American and foreign troops FOR THE HOUR OF MARTIAL LAW IN AMERICA.

I interviewed three German Bundeswehr MP´s fresh from Kosovo, pistols strapped to their sides and white MP armbands on their arms. Here are their revealing comments (This interview took place at the train station in Munich.)

"Oh, yes, we know about our German troops in America..Fort Bliss and Holloman AFB..." I asked, "Do you know WHY they are there...for the hour of martial law, to help arrest Americans and seize their weapons and fire upon them if they resist?" The spokesman for the group said, "Yes, we have heard all this, AND IT IS TRUE." (Yet so many of my fellow Americans DO NOT!)

Looking at him intently, I asked him this question: "IF martial law is declared in America, could you fire UPON ME???" He would not reply as he looked at me. His cold, steely eyes reflected the position of a professional soldier hardened by German military training and experience in Kosovo. Stiffening, he abruptly excused himself and his two companions and hurried off to their train. We understood each other perfectly.

US military are also being hardened through their experience in the Balkans. They are being conditioned to serving under UN BLUE and NATO..much as they will do in America under martial law. They are being conditioned to deal with "militants, insurgents, resisters," which is exactly how all Patriot resisters under martial law will be labeled as by the US government and military. Fellow Americans, it is truly time to wake up to the reality of the coming quest for America ... and to realize the extent to which we have been betrayed and decieved in this matter. As Chuck Colson once admitted, "It is not inconcievable that, in the future, the US miltary will be used AGAINST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE."

I tell you, I am watching with my own eyes the preparation and conditioning of our American troops for that very hour.

As one military soldier (whom I interviewed in Germany), a previous trainer of foreign troops in MOOT exercises at Fort Polk, LA, admitted to me when he read through my book, PREMONITIONS OF AN AMERICAN HOLOCAUST (regarding coming martial law,) "Ma´am, everything in your book IS TRUE, and I am leaving America with my wife and child as soon as I can ... because MARTIAL LAW IS COMING ... AND IT WILL BE TERRIBLE WHEN IT DOES."

What the US news media is desperately trying to hide from the American people, I am watching firsthand here in Europe as so many joint military exercises take place one after the other, and each one points to preparation for COMING MARTIAL LAW

(And why not?? IF the Russian threat and the cold war is OVER, then WHY ALL THESE EXERCISES???)
