I was just needling him. I wasn't really expecting to convince either geode or Bob. But it sounds like we are pretty much in agreement on the publicity angle.

Dr. Laura and Bob have similarities and differences.

Similarities: Both are controversial. Both are capable of giving good advice and bad advice. Both have a wide following. Both heavily screen their calls. Both have strong convictions.

Differences: With Dr. Laura, each person is only allowed one call to the program. (The cynical among us would say that this is to prevent people from calling back to tell everyone how her advice screwed up their lives.) Bob has no such rule. Bob is a much better listener than Dr. Laura, IMO. Bob makes an effort to remain non-partisan about politics.

Re: There's an old saying among media people: "There's no such thing as bad publicity."

I believe that is typically the truth, for media people. Not always, but usually.
