Maybe its used as a currency hedge? Buy/sell overnight based on whatever currency and the close out the next day in USDs. Not sure.

At this point I think gold trading is mostly a currency play rather based on its close relation to the dollar. I purchased a chunk of physical today since its playing out the way I expected so far. Not a surprise that they tried to bounce the stock market today and the dollar, but good luck going forward.
