I disagree. The price of Sparc hardware is competitive with X86 when you make an apples-to-apples comparison. People think X86 hardware is cheaper because they ignore the differences in capabilities (e.g. comparing 32 bit X86 hardware with 64 bit Sparc).

And the very same compiler that comes free with Linux is also available for Solaris. Furthermore, you can run Linux software on Solaris.
