If verification is impossible, than you are talking about faith. Faith that the people who recorded it knew how to interpret what they were seeing. Faith that they wrote it down accurately. And faith that it has been translated and preserved precisely. That's quite a lot of faith.

The people involved in writing this down were even less impartial than I am. They totally believed this guy (if he existed, if they existed). The people who preserved these texts had a vested interest in them. The people who translated the texts had a vested interest in them.

faith (fth)
n.

1.Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, an idea, or a thing.
2.Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence. See Synonyms at trust.
3.Loyalty to a person or thing; allegiance: keeping faith with one's supporters.
4.Often Faith. Theology. The theological virtue defined as secure belief in God and a trusting acceptance of God's will.
5.The body of dogma of a religion: the Muslim faith.
6.A set of principles or beliefs.

Clearly you have "faith" in the sequence of events you believe in (unless I very much misconstrue your position and the definition of faith). If it was very obvious everyone would have "faith" in it. But it is not very obvious. Many other things appear to equally, or even more obvious. Islam is apparently very obvious to Muslims. Judaism is obviously very obvious to Jews. I have even heard that Hinduism is very obvious to Hindus, but who knows?
