most Westerners are blind to the cultural gap that divides East and West. for instance, the notion of 'losing/gaining face' is a very strong motivation in Eastern attitudes. why did China not devalue in the Asian crisis of '97/'98? there's only ONE reason: it 'gained face', a considerable amount thereof, by holding firm. besides, i believe the Chinese leadership is acutely aware of the fact that simply giving in to US demands is invariably a huge diplomatic/political mistake. there never is any kind of reward - on the contrary, the US will always interpret it as a sign of weakness, and act accordingly.
