Korea Leads World in Broadband Internet
Penetration

By Kim Deok-hyun

Korea has leads in broadband Internet penetration with more than
half of Korean households using high-speed Internet solutions,
according to a survey by an Internet measuring firm NetValue.

Of the 11 countries studied, the United States is second behind
Korea in percentage of households connected to broadband, where
one in nine online households use broadband.

Korea boasts of being the most wired country in the world with 57.3
percent household broadband penetration.

``In terms of broadband penetration, the figure in the U.S. is
significantly lower than Korea's,'' it said.

France has the highest percentage of broadband households in
Europe, with one in 16 online households having a broadband
connection, twice that found in the United Kingdom. Only one in 32
online households use broadband in the U.K., which is still lagging
far behind Asia, the rest of Europe and the U.S. in home broadband
connections.

Broadband Internet solutions can include cable, satellite, asymmetric
digital subscriber line (ADSL) or T1/leased line connections.

In addition, the survey said nearly 74 percent of the Korean Internet
population used audio or video, and 54 percent participated in online
gaming.

Although only 5 percent of Internet households in Germany are using
a broadband connection, Germany leads the other countries included
in the report for integrated services digital network (ISDN) usage. In
February, 37.8 percent of German Internet households were linked
to an ISDN, followed by Denmark with 19.5 percent of households.

The survey also found that a gender gap in broadband usage is
evident.

Overall, the male population accounted for 59.7 percent of total
high-speed Internet users while female counterparts posted 40.3
percent.

The survey emphasized that network operators and content
providers should pay more attention to users aged 14 and under age
group.

``By recognizing that 14 and under users account for a significant
portion of broadband usage, businesses should target their marketing
and advertising initiatives and tailor their product offerings to that age
group,'' it said.
