well, in such situations, it may be instructive to imagine the whole thing in reverse: what if a Chinese plane had been caught spying near US shores? the outrage would no doubt have been great.

and let's not forget, re. trade, that the other side of the coin is the capital account...China holds a lot of US treasury debt.

in any event, i don't think much can be gained from further antagonizing China, although i do understand that there is a limit to how far concessions should go.
