Dear Ted:

Too much interchange via the internet for those who have a lot to lose over the problems a major incident could cause. Many of the assembly industries that produce the exports the economy needs uses parts imported from just those places that would be shut off in response to a real dust-up. It could set back their economy so that would take decades to recover.
The companies do care that enough stability exists so that they can get their profits out of the country to where it is safe. Without that assurance, many companies would close up shop because if you can not profit from it, they will not go and do those things that can make money. If all of your profit is taken or that you can't get to it, what good was making it? None. Worse than none as you could have done something else. The rewards must be more than the risk. Sometimes much more.

If their economy collapses, they will not be able to afford the food to keep from starving. China is already at the limits of their ariable land can support. A crop failure, drought, or other natural calamity, and there will be widespread starvation. And starving people are very unhappy and that breeds revolution, and that can remove governments from power. China is no longer self-sufficient for food, energy, and many other things. This means they can least afford a trade snafu. Which is one possible outcome from the small incident before us.

Yes, they have more to lose than one would see at first glance. It is just sad that they appear not to have learned from history either.

Pete
