So do you have any evidence those people sold themselves into servitude?

I have no reason to believe than anyone has ever sold himself into slavery although I seem to recall indentured servants in the colonial days contracting to serve a number of years in exchange for passage to America. My point was purely abstract--that freedom includes the freedom to give up one's freedom.

And saying that outside nations have no right to intervene in THAT situation is mind-boggling.

I assume by "THAT situation" you mean Sudan. I guess nations have the right to intervene if they want. I don't know what would stop them. I don't think it's right to intervene to save someone who doesn't think his situation requires his being rescued, but it seems reasonable to assume that the Sudanese slaves would want to be rescued.

I would think the high seas would be the best place to try to rescue slaves. While they're at sea, you're just dealing with a commercial venture, not a country. I don't know what international law there is on the subject but I would hope that people en route to slavery could and would be rescued.

My impression is that the slavery in Sudan is not commercial. I still don't know enough to evaluate that situation. It doesn't sound much like the slavery we had in the US.

Just to recap, this discussion started over whether "we" should be intervening to impose our values on others. Here is the link.
