It's those damned homogenious societies that are usually hiding behind there ignorance. Eric, Its true that the origin of the US's population is made up of peoples from all over the world. However they did not all get here at the same time and as a result, each newly arrived ethnic group was greeted with distain, prejudice and fear. In Mpls. the first to arrive were the English who kicked out the native Americans. Then when the Germans appeared they were assigned there own special 'place' and then later when the Swedes emigrated they occupied the neighborhood which is known til this day as the Swedish Ghetto.....and the same was true for the later arriving Irish, Jews, and then the Mexicans and the now the Vietnamese. In LA, what is now the Latino neighborhood was once a Jewish enclave and before that, Irish. This same story has been repeated throughout the US since its founding. And I can assure you that the latest to arrive were not treated well by the 'established Americans'. The distain came from the new arrivals being different; the fear from not understanding the new culture and language; the bias because the new arrivals were disenfranchised and generally poor. We carry this xenophobia to the present. In part it has served us well through most of our history...it forced people to assimilate into the dominate culture......we would have soon fallen apart had there been 50 disparate cultures running around the countryside..each jockeying for position. But now, it works against us because we have a very hard time understanding other cultures and we don't feel very comfortable around them. We are relieved that our size and status forces the rest of the world to learn English. There are very few of us who are bilingual..its as if the gene has been processed out of us. And when you don't know the language, then you can not know and understand the culture and that's when the fear comes into play. ted
