Eric: We also have this twisted notion that foreigners come here to escape from something to a "better life" - not to setup a little piece of home in our collective backyards. If new arrivals wanted to be home then they should have stayed home, has been a popular notion.

Great point... this is why I prefer Canada (well.. I'm a Canadian.. so uh.. I guess I have my own bias) .. it has a policy of multiculturalism and the notion of a mosaic society (as opposed to the melting pot your way) where different cultures are viewed as a strength for keeping their heritage.. not a weakness. Billingualism is also obviously present here with French and English being the 2 official languages...

Thats not of course to say everyone agrees with this up here.. lots of the conservative element in rural Ontario and out west would probably object to it.. and did indeed object strongly to bilingualism when it was first introduced.. but it barely registers anymore... except of course, in the ironic positon when we have a naitonalist or separatist provincial government in Quebec trying to suppress English and other languages in the misguided effort to protect the french language (which is what official billingualism already does)

Everyone has their own opinion... but I find the mosaic/multicultural/bilingual society more culturally vibrant and prmotes in the long run more tolerance.. You cannot believe the literally thousands of ethnic Canadians from other countries who praised Pierre Trudeau at his death.. he the creator of all this -- saying that they were canadians because of this man's vision and Canada's policies.
