Jets "herding" plane near stall speed (not too maneuverable then) very close and somehow they accidently collided. Those planes will react quite differently to the same aerodynamic influences like changes in crosswind speed. Or jet made a harassing macho move slicing in front and misjudged. Oops! The Chinese pilot was reported to be one of their most aggressive pilots. And fighter pilots are pretty shagging aggressive to begin with.

I don't think either one intended this to happen as some have speculated. These fighter jet jockies play a hell of a game of chicken in encounters.
