To: mishedlo who wrote (92063 ) 4/10/2001 2:24:04 AM From: Skeeter Bug Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 436258 >>Jordan is THE best player ever in basketball IMHO<< mine, too. my point is that i didn't want to believe it. jordan was just sooooo GOOD i had no choice. i'm biased, though. i appreciated magic's will, desire and determination. i remember a game 6 clincher against the sixers - kareem abdul jabbar was out - and magic played center, forward and guard and scored 42 points, collected 15 rebounds, dished 7 assists, ripped 3 steals. not bad for a 20 year old playing against the best in the world. :-) it was a stunning performance in prime time that few have duplicated. my memory isn't the best, but i haven't forgotten that 42 points in over 20 years. i really value heart in a person. jordan had unreal heart matched with uncanny abilities. the total package. bird and magic didn't have the same abilities (they lacked a lot in quickness and jumping ability and had a small height advantage). however, they had the same heart and determination. drop them in jordan's body and they wouldn't lose a step compared to the real michael. anyway, i'm not going to compare across sports - there are so many great athletes it is too hard. imho, apart from michael jordan, magic and bird did more for the game of basketball than anybody in the last 30 years. not that they were necessarily the greatest, but their competitive spirit and intensity took the nba from a league in trouble (the middle class couldn't relate to them, etc.) to one of the hottest tickets in town. jordan took their huge contribution to another level. we'll just have to disagree that there are more than 400 folks that did what magic was able to accomplish (led - and i mean led , he didn't follow - teams to high school, college and nba championship in 3 out of 4 years (all 3 before he turned 21 years old!), 5 world championships overall, 3 league and 3 championship mvps and an all around enthusiastic and fun guy that made everyone around him much better. one of his greatest attributes - unselfishness for the greater good of the team - should benefit his memory, not be an excuse to look at his numbers and say somebody was better. magic WAS showtime. showtime WAS the nba for a good while. i'd be curious what age you are b/c the la/boston era was one helluva an era and magic was a joy to watch in his prime. i still recall a game in playoffs against seattle, in seattle. magic was a 20 year old rookie and seattle was the defending world champions . seattle was up near the mid 20s and then, out of nowhere, SHOWTIME took over. la won by over 10. outscored the world champs by 30 in about 24 minutes and went on to win the title. led by magic johnson. a rookie that couldn't buy beer. he was awsome. no need for 399 more posts, we can just agreeably disagree. not on michael, though. he was the best. the guy could bring tears to your eyes... i'll end with epsn's top 100 athletes of the century. magic johnson is number 17. i think that is much more fitting given his HUGE contribution to the sport of basketball than 400+ something.espn.go.com
