More rumors of Intel's kamikaze pricing: xbitlabs.com

Pentium 4 Prices May Drop by over 50% before the End of April [6:16 pm] Rat
A week before Intel Pentium 4 1.7GHz is to be announced, on 15 April, the prices on other Intel Pentium 4 CPUs will drop down:
The cost of Intel Pentium 4 1.5GHz will drop from $637 to $519, i.e. will get 19% lower.
The cost of Intel Pentium 4 1.4GHz will drop from $423 to $375, i.e. will get 12% lower.
Intel Pentium 4 1.7GHz, which is due on 23 April. Will cost $701 at launch.
All these things have been already reported on the web. However, today we got a word from one of our sources rumoring that in the end of April, namely on 29 April, Intel is planning one more price drop for its Pentium 4 processors, which is expected to be impressively significant. Here is what we were told on the matter:
The cost of Intel Pentium 4 1.7GHz will drop down to $361, i.e. by 49%.
The price of Intel Pentium 4 1.5GHz will drop down to $256, i.e. by 51%.
The cost of Intel Pentium 4 1.4GHz will get down to $193, i.e. by 49%.
Of course, the info on such a massive price reduction may sound somewhat confusing. We will do our best to prove or disclaim this info in the nearest future. And in the meanwhile we would advise you not to buy any Pentium 4 CPUs before the end of April.
BTW, if you happen to know something about this price drop, please send me a note at anna@xbitlabs.com.

Yah, well said Dan.

AMD is ensuring that INTC does not have the resources to cripple them in the future, by hitting them where it hurts now. They have brilliantly turned INTC's huge advantage - capacity - into a burdensome disadvantage.

Dan3:

"The spectre of Intel "crushing" AMD
always comes to mind. Is this likely? I don't think so."

If the past year is any precursor of future trends, assuming palomino is up and ready to fly, exactly the opposite scenario is what appears to be unfolding...AMD is current "crushing" INTC and if the trend continues at the current pace, INTC could be in a heap of financial trouble real fast...I've said it before that it is in all our interests, including AMD's, that INTC be accorded a soft landing.

"PS - If AMD ever ships mobile or sever parts, things get a little bit better for AMD and much worse for Intel. AMD will get a little more for a server or
notebook chip than it is getting now, while Intel will have to slash prices to avoid losing too large a share of these key markets."

A successful palomino launch virtually assures AMD of operating at capacity for the foreseeable future and at the same time provides an upward bias on ASP's owing to the richer mix when palomino's come on stream!!!

Dan

re: Was AMD sitting on the 1.2 and 1.33 parts until the slower parts sold through?

The desktop business does not bother me much. AMD may be as late as they want and they probably would be since the new talks of t-birds at 1.5GHz. AMD is missing laptop revenue and that is the issue amd may resolve via mobile palomino.
