Tantalum - a brief introduction: Tantalum is a rare metal which has seen a spectacular price rise over the past year from about US$50 per pound of tantalum pentoxide concentrate (60% tantalum pentoxide basis) to a peak of US$400 on the spot market - although generally quoted prices are currently in the US$130 to US$180 per pound range. Tantalum is often associated with pegmatites rich in other rare metals such as lithium and niobium. World mine production is dominated by two mines in Australia and Cabot Corp's Tanco Mine in Manitoba. Ore grades at these mines vary from 0.022 to 0.200% tantalum pentoxide.

The recent rise in the price of tantalum is a direct result of the preferred use of tantalum capacitors in miniaturized electronic circuits. The ever increasing miniaturizing of electronic circuits in mobile phones and electronic devices of all sorts has caused recent shortfalls in the supply of tantalum. This increased demand is resulting in a tantalum-oriented exploration spurt as never seen before and in the expansion of existing production capacity.
