wayne, have you heard of the hedonic price deflator and the chained dollars (read, not real dollars!) it adds to gdp? this is well documented. conspiracy? try manipulation. but then, you probably think bezos is a "straight shooter" and nobody ever acts in their own self interest! ;-) check out... mwhodges.home.att.net for a decent discussion on how the numbers are skewed. i believe kurt richebacher is the guy who has been fighting most vigorously against these types of distortion. here's another nice discussion from an si contributor...
