ild...I play the long side of the boxes in an IRA. If the position is truly hopeless, I close it rather than keeping it boxed (to minimize the problems of tying up capital). One advantage is that the long side is tax-deferred, it also gives me a means to move funds from one account to the other without exposure. (Of course if the box positions go against me its a disadvantage because the loss can't be deducted). And of course, this mechanism allows me to defeat the uptick rule, and not have to go through the hassle of having the broker borrow stock when I want to reopen a position.
