there r rules as to how pieces in chess may move. there are a few tricky exceptions.
pawns move straight ahead on their file. the first time a pawn moves it can move ahead one or two squares. thereafter it can move ahead only one square. however, a pawn cannot capture a piece on its file. it cannot move ahead if an enemy piece blocks it by being where it could ordinarily move. a pawn captures by moving ahead one square on the diagonal.
en passant permits a pawn on the 5th rank to capture an enemy pawn by moving ahead one square on the diagonal even though the enemy pawn moved two squares, the pawn on the 5th rank can act as if it only moved one square. this opportunity only exists for the move after the opponent moved its pawn two squares.
one can castle on the king or queen side. one castles by moving the king two squares toward the rook and moving the rook just past where the king is moved. there are many restrictions on castling. the rook and king cannnot have previously moved. the squares over which the king moves cannot be under attack.
