andreas:

"I agree, that would be a desperate move from Intel. But if these price cuts are real, AMD will have a very hard time to maintain Athlon ASPs. Even if you consider added platform costs for P4 (Rambus, expensive motherboards etc.), Athlon can't be priced that much above P4s. So if a 1.4 GHz P4 sells for $193 at the end of the month, we can expect the 1.3 GHz Athlon in the same range, probably even below. Unless, of course, AMD changes its pricing strategy. The best strategy to counter these price cuts would be IMO the release of a 1.4 GHz Athlon."

Assuming a worldwide market of 35 million units per quarter, one would have thought that there'd be ample room for both the Dresden Athy and the P4 at the topend...After all Dresden output is somewhere around 3.5 million units leaving lots of room for the P4, as well, in the top end...INTC isn't producing enough P4's at the moment to flood the top end, so I can only conclude that the consumer has wisened up and is no longer willing to pay a premium price for an inferior product...Could be quite a while, if ever, before INTC regains its position of eminence, if these price cuts are indicative of the new order arising in the market place...

Andreas, Re: "So if a 1.4 GHz P4 sells for $193 at the end of the month, we can expect the 1.3 GHz Athlon in the same range, probably even below."<.i>

This isn't much of a drop for the 1.3 GHz as PW first page entries presently average about $223 (range $217 to $229), especially if AMD can add another processor to the top of the range.

I do want to see mobile products and at least workstation/server Palominos NOW! And of course, 760MP!
