The comprehensive manner of Hamed’s Las Vegas defeat to the Mexican was such that a few confidence-builders seem to be in order, but HBO want the pay-per-view rematch immediately. Speaking to the British Press Association, HBO executive Kery Davis said: “The next fight for Hamed will be Barrera. My feeling is he will fight Barrera next and it will be on pay-per-view. He can't have any interim fights which are off HBO; his contract just mandates that if he loses a fight, he has to have an immediate rematc.” The AOL/Time Warner owned network has invested millions of dollars in the English showman’s career and it is surprising they would risk one of their biggest stars having two back-to-back defeats. Davis added: “It was an impressive win by Barrera, but I think Hamed can fight better. You have to think that the fight fans are still going to tune in to see if he can beat this guy in a rematch. I think the second fight is probably even bigger.” That is undoubtedly true, but it will still be a huge fight in a year’s time when Hamed has formulated a more complex gameplan than he employed against the Mexican at the MGM Grand. There are also rumours of a new trainer, perhaps Floyd Mayweather Sr, being brought in by Hamed and the former WBC, WBO and IBF featherweight champion will need time to adjust to any new regime. But Davis added: “What I saw was a guy who can beat Barrera, if he fights the right game. He didn't throw combinations, he certainly didn't make any adjustments. He certainly wasn't the same guy who's been developing over the last three or four fights. Does he necessarily win the re-match? I don't know, but he can certainly fight a lot better, and I'd like to see it.”secondsout.com
