ben, i think it is more serious than that. they could lower the rhetoric a bit. they could even have returned the hostages and claimed the plane as "evidence." this is far more than gaining time to search a plane we will never see again - hostages or no hostages. this is a way for the chinese govt to get their people to band together in hate and attempt to get the u.s. to grovel - which i don't see happening. therefore, they are just playing politics of hate and the u.s. is the target. so much nationalism is involved now that neither nation can "lose face." i hope i'm wrong.
