I believe that the primary reason that AMD has not had much success with the corporate market is that corporate buyers want stability.

That, IMHO, is the biggest lie being perpetuated by Intel (and their stooges). There is absolutely no reason to even "offer" a sub line or a brand with Athlon in it.

The other day, my friend wanted to buy a "brand name" computer for his office and decided on Athlon. He could not find one from any of the brand mfg's (CPQ, GTW, MICRON, HP) in the US, with Win2000 preinstalled. Who want's a "toy" Win9X OS on their work (or any) computer!

I can't believe how easily people believe the "Corporate America does not want the Athlon (or AMD) because of the unproven brand name". If that was the case, INTC would never have toppled IBM and DELL would never have toppled CPQ!

AMD plans to move from Socket-A to an integrated NB and HT with Hammer beginning in less than a year

Dale, are you sure about this? I've been looking for new HT/LDT info, and it's pretty sparse. Very vague references about the system bus, such as:

With its peak data transfer rate of 6.4GBps, HyperTransport
Technology will be integrated into AMD's next-generation
processors, Mitchell said.

"[HyperTransport Technology] will arrive in the chip sets that support Athlon later
this year," Mitchell said. "But it doesn't change Athlon's socket, it only adds
throughput."

The added throughput will significantly increase Athlon's bus speed past its current
average of 200MHz, but Mitchell refused to offer an exact figure.

HyperTransport Technology will be available to support future AMD processors as
well, including the company's 64-bit x86 chip, code-named SledgeHammer, which is
slated to begin shipping early next year.

The canonical MP picture still seems to be this oft-recycled one, linux.ing.uniroma1.it , a slide from linux.ing.uniroma1.it . I found an old ref about an integrated north bridge on the hammers, but nothing particularly current. All very murky.

IDG's top 10 PC's. The list seems a little out of date. No Athy's above 1100. P4 is on top, but all Athy's are less expensive. Found through CNN story.

RE: <I believe that the primary reason that AMD has not had much success with the corporate market is that corporate buyers want stability. They want a platform that will be viable for the next 3-4 years (no change of system bus) and be shippable in adequate volumes. AMD plans to move from Socket-A to an integrated NB and HT with Hammer beginning in less than a year, and with just two fabs could run into capacity problems prior to 2004 when Fab35 begins to ramp.>

Dale,

Actually I think it's a lot simpler than that. My friend is the lead server guy at a very large company and when I asked him half in jest to push the decision makers to use Athlon systems he said it would never happen until AMD got a system offered by a top tier vendor (in their business line). That was because the number one and only truly inflexible requirement they have for deciding on systems is that they come from a top tier vendors business line. That's it, he said if AMD could get a system offered from a top tier vendor in their business line then he could get them considered but that it wasn't even subject to consideration until then.

My believe is that AMD's lack of business penetration has nothing to do with AMD's product or pricing or infrastructure. It is almost exclusively due to the fact that there are no top tier OEM's willing to stick their neck out and offer a business PC with Athlon inside. Thus the catch 22 that AMD cannot penetrate the corporate market because no top tier vendor offers a business system and no top tier vendor is offering a business system because there are no companies asking for them (because they don't consider it an option).

AMD has to break that vicious cycle, they have a tough row to hoe, but I don't think anyone in business is thinking we aren't gonna buy AMD because of stability issues or infrastructure. They aren't buying AMD because AMD isn't even an option at the most basic level, they aren't even in the running until a top tier vendor gives them the nod and offers a product.

Just my two cents,

Epinephrine

Dale
re: ...that means they will either stick with the P-III...platform that will be viable for the next 3-4 years....
we stack with pIII which is not going to be a platform for the next 4 years. Our IT guys rely completely on Dell for hardware no matter what it is or how much it costs.
We have ~15,000 people working here so I would assume that we, at least, not a very small shop and dell is pushing pIIIs.

If the Planet 3DNow! "interview" with AMD is to be believed, AMD will keep SocketA around for at least 2 years AFTER the intro of Hammer.
