Agree: AMZN is for convenience, not efficiency. However, AMZN will create new economy of scales for all brick and mortar competitors because people will price compare online when they shop. That may push prices and profit margins of brick and mortars down enough where their efficiencies come into question also. OIL and shippin costs are a factor, but Americans, when somewhat affluent or just plain lazy, do want the convenience. For shareholders, the question is when will the BEZOS infrastructure business model pay off for the stock price?
Too early to tell for me, I sold AMZN and while the current good news is good, I am still buying and holding PALM and NTAP for better GROWTH and solid old fashion distribution channels, plus the Clicks like on AMZN.
I am,
Truly your$,

How many books does borders.com sell? I think it would it be safe to say that this agreement essentially amounts to one more distribution facility taken over by a third party.

The deal in this case seems to be "Borders agrees (to what in practice is) to take over the lease at one of Amazon's distribution centers" and in exchange "Amazon lends borders their amazing e-commerce database --Amazon's main competitive advantage-- so they too can benefit from it".

IMHO this deal is extremely one sided in favour of Borders, and the only reason Amazon agreed to it is because it desperately needs to get rid of its overbuilt distribution center capacity.
