hi e

this is what i posted to you the other day about a locked disk...

from Symantec Norton Utilities 2000 4.5 - Win95/98 knowledge base

"Error: "Disk in use by another utility..." when launching Norton Utilities applications

Situation:
When you run a Norton Utilities program, it displays the message: "Disk in use by another utility close...before running."

Solution:
Many programs that access the hard drive are required by Windows to "lock" a drive before running. Only one program at a time can lock a drive. When another program has locked the drive, some of the Norton Utilities applications, such as Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk, will display this error message and will not run.

To resolve the problem, restart the computer to MS-DOS mode and run Ndd.exe. This should unlock the drive. You can then restart into Windows and run the Windows application that was generating the error."

service1.symantec.com

there is more to the article, but you have already tried it.

i have to tend to some other business for awhile, but will try to get back to you, in case you need more assistance with the above.

tc is doing a terrific job, and perhaps he will be available to lead you through the maze.

btw, if you are running a different version of nu or nsw than is noted above, we should search out the knowledge base (kb) for a better article. i also posted the symantec kb url the other day, i believe. maybe not.

(sorry so little time)

good luck

:)
