You can say hello to the parents first so they feel safe knowing who you are and then talk to the children if you choose too.

When I was a child I learned from adults. As an adult I'm afraid of children. I had a friend who was a principal who after scolding grade school children for not behaving would give them a hug and a pat on the butt before going back to class. The newspaper got on that and drove him to shoot himself in the head with a rifle. Even those who said it happened said there was no sexual anything about it. He was thought of as the best principle around and died because he cared.
